Blue Hills is a reservation outside of Boston. Below is some information about it, taken from its official website, Blue Hills Reservation:
Located only minutes from the bustle of downtown Boston, the DCR Blue Hills Reservation stretches over 7,000 acres from Quincy to Dedham, Milton to Randolph, providing a green oasis in an urban environment. Rising above the horizon, Great Blue Hill reaches a height of 635 feet, the highest of the 22 hills in the Blue Hills chain. From the rocky summit visitors can see over the entire metropolitan area. With its scenic views, varied terrain and 125 miles of trails, the Blue Hills Reservation offers year-round enjoyment for the outdoor enthusiast.
It's quite a beautiful place, as Stanford learned. Here is a picture from one of the skyline trails:

In case anyone wonders (as I did), Centre College is located in Kentucky. Both Harvard and Centre had winning records that year. Here is some information about the school (as it is today) from Wikipedia:
Centre College is a private liberal arts college located in Danville, Kentucky, a community of approximately 16,000 in Boyle County, about 35 miles south of Lexington, Kentucky. Centre is an undergraduate four-year institution with an enrollment of approximately 1,375 students. Centre was founded by Presbyterian leaders, with whom it maintains a loose affiliation, and officially chartered by the Kentucky General Assembly in 1819. The college is a member of the Associated Colleges of the South.

**********
Dr. Bertrand Martin Tipple (1868-1952) was quite a famous man in Methodist circles. His biography is at Wikipedia, along with his photo, shown below.
There are some interesting highlights to his life story. While he was at Syracuse University, he joined the Delta Upsilon fraternity and lived at the fraternity house at the same time that author Stephen Crane lived there.

During the years he was President of the Methodist International College in Rome, Italy (1911-1923), he got into more than one kerfluffle with the Pope; on one occasion, ex-President Teddy Roosevelt also got involved.

**********
Ginter's was a restaurant back then. Stanford has evidently gotten a job at the restaurant. He doesn't say what kind of work he was doing, though.

Left is a picture of the restaurant taken from a 1920 negative.

Tremont Temple is a Baptist Church. Below is a photo of its interior and some information about it, taken from the church's website, Tremont Temple:

A Vibrant Church In Boston

Tremont Temple Baptist Church has a rich history that has made it a leader in the Boston area for social justice, evangelism, and human rights. In the 1830s the struggle for social justice was seen in the fight for the abolition of slavery. The churches were at times defenders of the status quo and even charged for seating. In 1838 a group of men led by Timothy Gilbert started the Baptist Free Church. It was “free” in that there was no rent charged for pews, but more than that it was for the freedom of all people, being the first integrated church in America.

**********
In 1922, men were still wearing collars, something that was added to one's shirt. They were usually quite stiff, and must have been uncomfortable. Below is a 1922 ad depicting a man wearing a shirt collar. The ad calls it "little," so it must have been deemed smaller compared to earlier models, perhaps those designed to be worn by older men.
Taken from Pinterest
Tangerine was a musical comedy that opened on Broadway in 1921. I wonder if the play Stanford and Hanford saw was a touring company version or a college production? Here is the synopsis:
Dick Owens gets jailed with his three friends, he for a brawl and his friends for not paying alimony. Owens is visited in jail by Shirley Dalton, the girl he loves. She has decided not to marry him until his jailed friends are happily back with their wives. Owens takes his friends then escapes to Tangerine, a South Sea isle run by King Home-Brew, an American expatriate. In Tangerine, the women do all the work while the men stay at home. Eventually the men are sick of the stay at home life, and all couples are reunited.
Doesn't sound like a very good play.

Lynnfield, Massachusetts was settled in 1638, the same year as New Haven. It boasts one of the oldest wood frame houses in the country, Hart House, built around 1695. Below is a picture of the house after it was restored to its original look.

**********
Seiler Brubacher may have been someone Stanford knew from Schenectady, as he did live there with this parents before they moved to Albany around 1920. He did not go to Union as far as I can tell. Perhaps he attended a school in Albany.

The Old South Church is a famous landmark in Boston. You can read about it in Wikipedia. Below is a photo of the interior showing the Tiffany window behind the altar.

**********
Dean Beebe is James A. Beebe, the dean of the School of Theology. He was inaugurated as Dean in 1920. His photo (left) was probably from that year.

Stanford's new address, 68 Mt. Vernon St, looks like a better place.
Taken from Google Maps

Beautiful, bright and cool. Arose 7 A.M. To breakfast with H.H. To College 9-12 A.M. To Library. To B.U.S.T. Over and hired room at 68 Westland Ave. Back to 72. Wrote letter home. Lunch. Took suit case and moved over to 68. Wrote in diary etc. To bed 10 P.M.

**********
Below is a Google Street View photo of the address as it looks today. It is an apartment building now but must have been a rooming house in 1922.
The building was built in 1908, so was fairly new when Stanford moved in. I wonder how much he had to pay for his room? A two-bedroom apartment there now costs $3,000 per month.

Sunday, September 24, 1922

Beautiful, bright and warm. Arose 9 A.M. To First M.E. Church. Dinner. H.H. and I to Cambridge to see Leslie Jones. Supper there. Wrote letter home. Took walk to P.O. To bed 11 P.M.

**********
So Stanford is at last in graduate school! I wonder if he is glad to be free of egg candling and going out on business every day?

Friday, September 22, 1922

Fair, bright and warm. Arose & A.M. Washed etc. Up to School of Liberal Arts. Saw Mr. Taylor. Dinner. Back to B.U.C.L.A. Conference with Dr. Weyesse. All very pleasant. Family out to Stewarts for supper and evening at Lynnfield Center. To bed 12 P.M.

**********
It's not clear whether the Stewarts Stanford and family are visiting are Alexander Stewart and parents or Alex and his wife.

Stanford is at this time negotiating changing to Theology from Liberal Arts.

Thursday, September 21, 1922

Beautiful and warm. Foggy in A.M. Arose 5 A.M. Breakfast etc. Mother, Nellie, Ruth, H.H. & I to Boston with Kissel 6:30 A.M. - 5 P.M. 200 miles. Beautiful trip over Mohawk trail. Folks stayed at 65 Haycock St. I with H.H. temporarily at School of Theology. To reception in evening. For walk with Ruth. To bed 11 P.M.

**********
The place where Stanford's family stayed, 65 Hancock St, is in the Beacon Hill area of Boston. It is an apartment building now. Below is a picture of the building as it looks now.

The building might not look too pretty, but a 600 sq ft apartment there costs around $620,000. I guess it must be worth it to people who live there.l

Stanford doesn't say who lived at that address, but they must have been friends, probably through the church.

Wednesday, September 20, 1922

Fair, cool, and clear. Arose 8 A.M. Breakfast etc. Odd jobs. Out on little business. Dinner. Talked with father. To College after certificate of work. Talked with Mr. Roberts at church. Supper. Worked on car. To Church to see Dr. Frick and Miss Gallup. To bed 11 P.M.

It looks like Stanford is trying to decide whether to be a minister.

Well, if Hanford's trunk is heading for college, he won't be far behind. What about Stanford? Will he be going to college soon?

Monday, September 18, 1922

Beautiful, bright and cool. Arose 7 A.M. Breakfast etc. Candled eggs. Dinner. H.H. and I removed and replaced after mending right front spring of Kissel. Dr. Frick here to supper. Candled eggs in evening. To bed 11 P.M.

They seemed to have had a lot of ice cream socials around there! Maybe Stanford wanted to burn off some calories by walking to Schenectady.

**********
Must have been a fun trip. Here is a possible route:

Cooperstown's Baseball Hall of Fame was not founded until 1936, but that year there were two NY teams at the top of the rankings: the Giants and the Yankees. The World Series that year between those two teams took place Oct 4-8. The Giants won 4 of 5 games with one tied game. The Yankees had Babe Ruth and the Giants had Casey Stengel, among others of note.

The Beechnut Packing Co was located in Canajoharie, NY. In the 1920s they were packing all kinds of foods, including peanut butter and bacon (a short-lived offering), but not yet chewing gum or baby food. Below is a photo of their plant in the 1950s.

**********
Ed & Leila are Stanford's cousins. They are explained at this 1919 post: August 2. It is nice that the Clossons are taking Aunt Gertie along with them as she must still be grieving over the death of her husband a little over a month earlier.

**********
Welthy Honsinger was a Methodist missionary who eventually went off on her own with her work in the developing world, specifically China and then India. She sounds like a very interesting woman. The BU School of Theology has a little article about her on their website: Honsinger. Mrs. Daisy Bulkley was Field Secretary for Negro Conferences at that time.

Below is an article explaining the School of Missions and other conferences at Round Lake that summer.

Saturday, August 12, 1922

**********
Glad to see Merlin is still around. He must be home for the summer. Sabrina is a cousin, as explained in this 1919 post: August 5. Since they went to Sabrina's in August of that year, it must be an annual pilgrimage.

**********
Well, now we know the citation was sewn on rather than being a certificate. It must have something to do with Epworth League. John Myers and his wife Anna are family friends. Read about him at this post in the 1919 blog: May 5.

Wednesday, August 9, 1922

**********
I'm not sure what the "citations" were or what they were for. Did it have to do with the Institute he attended?

**********
Helen Brundige is probably a young woman who in 1920 lived with her widowed mother, brother Kenneth, and aunt in Scotia. Her mother was a milk dealer. I can find no record of her after 1930, so she may have married after that time. In 1922 she was 17.

Friday, August 4, 1922

Cool & overcast with showers. Arose 6 A.M. Breakfast etc. To classes. Dinner. Hung around. Played games in tabernacle. Supper. Took walk. To Life service meeting. Decision night. Good results. Took walk. To bed 11 P.M.

**********
So, I guess this is an Institute he's attending, an educational program sponsored by the Epworth League that continues to this day. Below is a picture of a group that went to Mount Hermon in the Santa Cruz Mountains of California in 1919.
Taken from Santa Cruz Trains
Ruth Pettit apparently went with him and the "bunch" from Scotia. Interesting . . .

Tuesday, August 1, 1922

Bright in A.M. Rain in P.M. Arose 6 A.M. Shaved, washed etc. Breakfast. To Classes. Dinner. To Loon Lake. In bathing. To E.L.I. grounds. Hung around. Talked, ate etc. To meeting in tabernacle. Stunt night. Out for walk. To bed 10:30 P.M.

**********
Stanford must be at some kind of conference, probably with the Epworth League. I don't remember his mentioning that he was going there, but it must be the reason for traveling to Schroon Lake. But now he's at Loon Lake, which is another 70 miles north. So maybe there's another Loon Lake that's near the Epworth League Institute. But I'm not sure where that is located either. I'm a little confused. But Stanford's seems to be enjoying himself!

Monday, July 31, 1922

Bright & warm in A.M. Showers in P.M. Arose 6 A.M. Breakfast. To Classes. Dinner. Fooled around in P.M. Played volleyball etc. Supper. P of 6 to C --- n. Around. Walked across river etc. Nice moonlight.* To bed 10:15 P.M.

**********
Not sure what Stanford's being so secretive about here. Perhaps some "sparking" was going on? The moonlight + * is suspicious.

Sunday, July 30, 1922

Wilbur P. Thirkield
***********
Bishop Thirkield was Wilbur P. Thirkield, a prominent Methodist minister from Ohio. Interestingly, he attended Ohio Wesleyan University and Boston University School of Theology. He was interested in African American issues and "championed the cause of education for African Americans," according to a Wikipedia article about him. He knew Booker T. Washington and served for a time as president of Howard University. His talk must have been interesting for the folks in Schenectady.

Shroon Lake is in the Adirondacks, about 80 miles northeast of Glenville. It's a pretty place to visit.

Tuesday, July 25, 1922

Beautiful, bright, mild day. Arose 9 A.M. Breakfast. Nellie's birthday. Froze ice cream. Chicken dinner. Gus Heckler cut hay. Supper. Out for ride in evening to Charlton etc. Home. Talked. To bed 10 P.M.

**********
Gus Heckler was Gustavus Heckler, who lived in Glenville. He was 60 years old in 1922, but was a farmer who owned his own farm and probably got paid well for cutting the Closson's hay, perhaps even in kind. He was married, with two children living at home in 1920. His wife was Analide, his children Roy and Hilda. Gus's parents were both born in Germany. He died in 1928.

Analide lived until 1952. She was the daughter of Judge Alexander Vedder of Schenectady. Below is a picture of his house as it looks now.
Taken from the Schenectady Daily Gazette

**********
Read about the Zerbys in this earlier post: May 24, 1922. Read about Leslie Jones in this post: May 6, 1919. He was one of Stanford's classmates. Below is his picture, taken from the 1921 Union yearbook, The Garnet. It makes sense that he would become a professor, given his scholarly achievements.

Jones was also a translator and author who published several books in his lifetime, including one on Celtic literature. Here is Amazon.com's list of his books: Leslie Webber Jones.

Saturday, July 22, 1922

**********
Croquet is pretty much the same as it was back in the 1920s, I think, although the tools may be different materials now. Below is a photo of a woman playing croquet in the 1920s in California.

Was the kerosene used to light lamps at the farm, do you suppose? Below is a picture of an antique lamp that may be similar to those used by the Clossons.
