Overcast, mild, with rain. Arose 8 A.M. Breakfast. Hair cut. Business, Dinner. Took nap. Cleaned up room etc. Supper. Mother up to stay with Aunt Gertie. To Proctors with Merlin and Russell. Talked with Cliff & Leland. To bed 1:30 A.M.

They always have quite a few attractions to fill up the evening. The movie, "The Amazing Lovers," was a rather complex silent film about espionage and thievery. Here is the synopsis, according to the American Film Institute:

A band of New York counterfeiters, led by Professor John Breede and backed by banker Martin Cardine, has agreed to print a number of fake French notes for an overseas gang. Yvonne La Rue, an emissary sent by the French gang to pick up the notes, meets Captain Marlowe, an ex-soldier who returned from France to find that Cardine had ruined his father and married his sweetheart Vera. One of the New York gang, in love with Yvonne, kills Cardine and makes Marlowe believe that he himself committed the murder while drunk. Marlowe is then blackmailed into an in-name-only marriage with Yvonne to prevent her from being deported as an undesirable alien. Yvonne turns out to be a Secret Service agent who unmasks the counterfeit ring, and she and Marlowe fall in love.

Beautiful, bright & warm. Arose 7 A.M. Breakfast. Uncle John died 8:30 A.M. after a life of usefulness and cheerfulness. Out on business A.M. & P.M. Supper. Played tennis with Merlin at Y 3-6; 6-4. Called on Mary Clute. To bed 1 A.M.

Beautiful, bright and warm. Arose 9 A.M. Breakfast. Father to Uncle John's with Dr. Kathan. Uncle John very bad. Dinner. Wrote letters etc. Repaired cement porches. Supper. Out for walk in evening. Called on Finch's. Merlin home. To bed 12 P.M.

So Stanford is still friends with Merlin Finch! And Uncle John is dying, apparently. It's interesting to me that a doctor would go to see someone who was dying. I think maybe we don't do that anymore, especially if someone is dying at home.

Wednesday, June 28, 1922

Beautiful, very warm and rather humid. Arose 8 A.M. Breakfast. Out on business. Called at Church office on N.L.G. Dinner. Father, Ruth & I to Park Site. Mowed lawn, planted, hoed etc. Supper. Uncle John Quite bad. Called 7:30-10:30. Home. To bed 11:41 P.M.

Fair bright and warm. Arose 5:15 A.M. Breakfast. H.H. left for Montpelier at 6 A.M. To Church to help put up platform. Pointed up cellar wall at 144. Dinner. Helped take down platform at Church. Repaired cement porches. Supper. Wrote letter to H.H. Out for ride. Home. Wrote in diary. Talked. Rebecca H. here. To bed 11 P.M.
